Our first game of the season. Just a few minutes into the game. Our coach tells me to check in for our shooting guard. We our now on offence. Our point guard brings the ball up the court. I get the ball. (thinking:Let’s get it!)………. Consider that the prologue of how I took my game to the next level.
The practice after that game was the day I got promoted to point guard. Yet I’m only a 6th grader on the 7th and 8th grade basketball team. A question that I’m guessing you’ve asked yourself is: “Wait a minute did I read this right? Did he just say he was a 6th grader on a 7th and 8th grade team?” The answer is yes. You did read this right and I did just say that. but before I can finish that little story, I’m going to tell you the events that led up to that.
To be honest I don’t even know how I found myself on the 7th and 8th grade team. At first I thought it was because I had advanced skills. Now that I’m older, I’m not sure of that. But hey, the fact that they chose me above the other people who probably had the same skills and maybe were better, that’s just a huge blessing.
I wasn’t even a student at the school, but that fateful day changed everything. We were checking out the school and meeting my classmates. I had just got done with saying hi to an old family friend who was teaching there. My mom was talking with the principle. Me and my brother Chashab (kashab) were outside at the basketball courts.
I was walking around waiting for my mom to get done talking with the principle when out of no where the people playing at the big hoops (they had small hoops and big hoops) invited me over to play with them. I looked at my Cash (nickname) and he said to go ahead.
That’s when it all started. We started playing and late into the game I guess you can say I got comfortable. I fell into a groove and was on fire. Since that day, throughout the school year, I was practicing and playing. Yet I wasn’t playing at full strength. Then again, I’m never playing at full strength. Now back to where we started. Well there isn’t much to say. We lost but like I said earlier, I did get promoted to point. I was able to be the floor general, and needless to say, I got better. Much better. But hey this is just the beginning of a long story of how I’m progressing in the sport I love. This is just part one. You know why? ‘CUZ WE JUST GETTING STARTED!
